Urban Acupuncture
To solve the city of Winchester’s problem of isolation, the introduction of cultural hubs throughout the city was proposed. The hubs help to encourage more activity and social interaction that would bring financial support to the city’s deprived areas. The site chosen is known to have high crime rates. It was chosen for its significantly low cultural facilities and its convenient location near the cathedral that would help create a relation to the landmark. The idea of the economically reviving cultural public square was taken from the temple car project. Renzo piano’s auditorium was also used an inspiration because of its use of spatial transparency that helps encourage social interaction, and a relationship between the outside and inside. The buildings proposed in this cultural hub are a cafe, restaurant, gallery, theatre and a sports arena.
