Market Hall
This project aimed to create a market place that captures Portsmouth City’s character and to encourage outdoor shopping in an online shopping age. It was inspired by Portsmouth’s own Boathouse No.4 building- a boat building industrial warehouse- with its saw-toothed roof and steel frame construction. An open plan design was created to encourage more pedestrian movement in the space.
The market hall’s choice of materials such as timber clad walls and a steel frame all evoke the industrial appearance of a boathouse in a dockyard- reminding the user of Portsmouth history as a port town. The roof-lights and sliding glass panels invite light to enter the space and ensure that the market hall is well-ventilated. The Market Hall also serves as a hub that would be the start of a green line pedestrian network that would link its site- Portsmouth’s commercial area- to the historic dockyard as a means to emphasize the importance of pedestrian movement and green public spaces.
